A new Paradiso Craft video about sweating the small stuff.

🀏 CRF-009: Small Things

I've just released a new Paradiso Craft video about the newest addition to my tabletop terrain system: small stuff! These are little bits and bobs that you can place to connect different elevations, create cover, or just add some details to your terrain.

Here's the video (there's also a little story about a cat!):

I don't think I'm beating those Final Fantasy Tactics allegations

The nice thing about using a super simple grid system for terrain is that it's extremely easy to extend! The system, in a nutshell, is this:

  • Everything is built on a 1-inch grid (in all 3 dimensions) and can have a magnet in the center of each 1-inch square that can connect to other terrain pieces.
  • All magnets facing up share the same polarity facing out, and all magnets facing down have the opposite polarity facing out, so that pieces can connect to each other when stacked.
  • All magnets on the sides of terrain pieces alternate polarity every inch square from left to right, so they can connect to each other in any rotation when aligned, or offset in 2-inch increments.

Not every inch square needs to be magnetized, and a lot of the time I'll randomly use cheap ferrous material like tacks or nails in place of magnets (in less essential places). I'm not made of money!*

I think my approach to terrain is kind of unusual, even among folks that magnetize their stuff. Traditionally you have a flat board that you add disconnected pieces onto, like hills, piles of rubble, and L-shaped ruins. The way I'm doing it, everything, even the ground, is integrated into the system.

In practice, it requires more setup before games, but I've found it provides a fun opportunity for collaboration between players in designing the field of play!
